Sorting Challenge – Treenuts

Treenut processing is characterized by a complex and heterogeneous product flow and the occurence of different defects. such as foreign bodies, defective and contaminated products. In general these unwantedor foreign bodies lower product quality and disrupt further production when used as an ingredient.

Every treenut has its own characteristics but the main stages of sorting are inshell, raw (shelled after cracking) and “blanched” (after roosting). All stages offer a different sorting challenge whereby the complexity for raw product is the highest, as it has many contaminants within the color spectrum of the good treenut. An advanced sort on both color and structure can improve quality and hence the competitive position of our clients in international trade.

Because of this complexity, traditional color sorters are insufficient or not capable to detect foreign bodies (wood, shells, stones, plastics) as they fall within the color spectrum of the treenut. But also older analogue laser sorters cannot cope adequate with this complexity at once and deliver high levels of false reject (shooting out your expensive good treenuts).

Typical defects can be product specific (like shells, stones, wood, septa, molded, mycotoxines, yellows, fragments,...) or foreign bodies contaminations (stones, plastics, glass, metals, and many others) introduced during harvesting or every step in the processing..
